Cement over lays and Micro toppings are used to rejuvenate or update the appearance of the concrete surface. They are very similar, as they are both plastic cement based products and applied over the surface of existing concrete. They are called plastic cements because they contain plastic within them. The plastic makes them a lot more flexible, weather resistant and gives them superior bonding properties over standard cement mixes.
Most Micro toppings are made with very fine sand. This product is placed as thin as a feather’s edge, and has a maximum thickness of ¼”. Most cement over lays are made with thicker sand and are placed with a thickness of ¼” to ½”. These products are commonly used to repair spalled concrete surfaces, and can also be used when concrete is in good structural condition, but a change in the appearance is desired.
In order to use these products, the existing concrete has to be properly prepared depending on its current condition. Any cracks in the existing concrete should be repaired. After the concrete is prepped, the over layments or micro toppings can be applied. There are many different looks that can be accomplished with these products. They could be used to fix spalled concrete, to create a new edging and broom finished surface, or to add a decorative appearance. To make a decorative finish with a Microtopping, acid stains or dye stains are typically used. These acid or dye stains can create a beautiful marble-like appearance. The surface can then be cut to the actual shape of tile to give a more realistic effect. If the preparation of the concrete is properly performed, and the overlayment has been properly applied the product should give a long lasting durable surface. There are plenty of jobs including driveways that have been done with these products in the past 20 years that are still being used today on a regular basis.
