Patios and walkways can be made from a variety of different masonry material and designs like concrete, pavers, stamped concrete, bluestone, and brick. A brick or bluestone walkway or patio can be installed by “wet laying” the brick or bluestone in the concrete or “dry laying” it over a bed of gravel. A paver walkway or patio is installed with no type of cement based products at all. Pavers are installed over a bed of gravel with plastic or metal edging on the sides, staked firmly into the ground to hold them in place with sand or polymeric sand installed between the joints. Pavers are then compacted to lock them in place.

A concrete walkway or patio is normally installed over a bed of gravel, with the purpose of creating a drainage bed underneath the concrete. Concrete is then poured over the gravel base of 4” thick. The surface of standard concrete is then, edged and broom brushed finished. Stamped concrete is created in the same manner as regular concrete with the addition of reinforcing additives to create a crack resistant concrete slab. Due to the precision and skill needed to create it, stamped concrete is considered decorative high-end work. The concrete is colored and stamped with rubber mats to give it a personalized design.

The concrete is then left to dry, detailed, and sealed with an acrylic sealer. The acrylic sealer generates a sacrificial coating shielding the concrete from every day wear and tear; just like polyurethane protects wood floors.
